SASE / SSE
Converged cloud network and security edge.
Overview
SASE unifies SD-WAN with cloud-delivered security (SWG, CASB, ZTNA, FWaaS) into one fabric; SSE is the security-only subset. It consolidates point products and shifts spend to per-user subscriptions. Buyers weigh single-vendor convergence against best-of-breed. POP footprint and performance SLAs matter for global orgs.
Architectural consolidation play; converge the edge once point tools mature.
Advantages
- Consolidates SWG/CASB/ZTNA/FWaaS into one fabric
- Zscaler/Netskope leaders
- Cato strong single-vendor SD-WAN+security
- reduces tool sprawl.
Trade-offs
- Significant lock-in and migration effort
- premium per-user cost
- single vendor becomes a single point of failure
- POP coverage varies globally.
Open-source option
SASE/SSE is an integrated cloud-edge service (global PoPs, inline inspection, DLP, CASB) with no full open-source equivalent. You can self-assemble pieces — ZTNA via OpenZiti (listed in this area) or NetBird/Headscale, web filtering via Squid/Pi-hole, FWaaS via OPNsense — but no OSS project delivers the converged, globally distributed fabric.
