Policy management software runs the full document lifecycle for security and corporate policy: drafting from templates, review and approval routing, versioned publication, targeted distribution, employee attestation capture, exception handling, scheduled re-review, and retirement — with an audit trail over each step. It is the first thing an ISO 27001 or SOC 2 auditor asks for, and the artifact most often produced late, unsigned, or three versions stale. The distinguishing question is whether policy lives as a controlled record joined to your control framework, or as a Word file in a shared drive with a spreadsheet of who claims to have read it.

Written, approved and acknowledged policy is the evidence every framework and regulator asks for first.

  • Turns "we have a policy" into evidence: version, approver, effective date and per-person acknowledgement
  • Attestation campaigns close the awareness gap ISO 27001 cl. 7.3 and SOC 2 CC1 both test
  • Template libraries cut a from-scratch policy set from months to weeks
  • Automatic re-review dates stop the silent drift into stale, unenforceable policy
  • Exception workflow gives you somewhere to put "we cannot comply yet" other than nowhere
  • Easy to mistake document volume for governance — 40 published policies nobody follows is worse than 12 that are enforced
  • Vendor templates need real editing; shipping them verbatim is visible to any competent auditor
  • Attestation fatigue is real if every policy is re-pushed to every employee every year
  • Standalone policy tools become another silo unless they join to controls and risks
  • Migration off a legacy tool is painful — version history rarely travels

Eramba and CISO Assistant both manage policy documents, review cycles and control linkage on self-hosted infrastructure. Neither matches the commercial tools on distribution and attestation UX (mobile sign-off, reminder cadence, HR-system-driven audience targeting), so expect to do that layer with your own scripting or an LMS.
