Internal Audit Management
Plans, tests and reports the audit universe.
Overview
Internal audit software runs the second and third lines of defence: a risk-ranked audit universe, an annual plan, engagement scoping, workpapers with review sign-off, sampling and control testing, issue tracking to closure, and reporting to the audit committee. It overlaps GRC but is not the same buy — auditors need independence, workpaper integrity and IIA-conformant documentation, not just a control library. SOX 404 testing is the deepest sub-case, and the reason the specialists (Optro, TeamMate+) keep beating generalist GRC suites in that seat.
Matters once you have an audit function or a SOX obligation; before that, audit readiness is the real need.
Advantages
- Workpaper integrity and reviewer sign-off give findings evidential weight
- A risk-ranked audit universe makes the annual plan defensible to the audit committee
- Issue tracking to closure closes the loop that spreadsheets always drop
- Reusable test scripts and sampling cut repeat-engagement effort sharply
- Analytics over full populations beats judgemental sampling for ITGC testing
Trade-offs
- Genuinely expensive, and priced per auditor — a two-person function struggles to justify it
- Implementations are consultant-heavy and methodology-opinionated
- Overlaps GRC and CCM tooling; buying all three duplicates the control library three times
- Only pays back where an actual internal audit function exists to use it
- Migrating historic workpapers between platforms is rarely worth attempting
Open-source option
Eramba includes a credible internal-audit module — audit plans, findings and linkage to controls — and CISO Assistant can run assessments against a framework. Neither offers workpaper review hierarchies, sampling, or the IIA-conformant documentation an external quality assessment expects, so open source suits audit readiness rather than an audit department.
