DDoS Protection

Absorbs volumetric and application denial-of-service attacks.

7 options listedTypical cost: $5k-$200k/yrPROTECT (PR)

DDoS services scrub or rate-limit flood traffic before it overwhelms applications and links. Delivered via always-on cloud scrubbing, on-demand redirection, or on-prem appliances. Cost tracks clean-traffic commit, scrubbing capacity, and protected assets. Often bundled with CDN/WAF.

Core for any internet-facing service; protects availability.

  • Cloudflare & Akamai offer massive scrubbing capacity
  • Cloudflare strong value with bundled WAF/CDN
  • always-on options protect availability automatically.
  • Cost scales with clean-traffic commit
  • on-prem appliances capped at link size
  • CDN bundling creates lock-in.

Absorbing volumetric DDoS still depends on globally distributed scrubbing capacity and carrier peering that cannot be self-hosted — no OSS project substitutes for that. But FastNetMon Community (free, GPL-2.0) is a genuine, actively maintained open-source option for the detection/triggering half of the problem: it watches sFlow/NetFlow/IPFIX and can fire BGP FlowSpec or RTBH blackhole rules, real value for teams with their own upstream/carrier relationship. Edge proxies (NGINX/HAProxy) and nftables rate-limiting still blunt small L7 floods.
